Since partnering with NOKIA Philippines at the onset of this year, our group has been able to provide and sift through hundreds of children from Childhope Asia and the Virlanie Foundation. Having to make the difficult decision of focusing on 40 children with artistic potential and the propensity to learn discipline and commitment in the process.
Since January this year, Sundays have been arts and music camp days for the volunteers of Rock Ed. The musicians of Terno Recordings’ band, Radioactive Sago Project have been dutifully showing up to give classes in learning the guitar, the drums, the keyboards and to practice singing. Francis de Veyra (bass guitar, voice and keyboards), Juan Miguel Lerma (guitars) and Jay Gapasin (drums and percussions) are supported by a rotation of Rock Ed volunteers to provide staffwork and support. Since the natural inclination of Rock Ed is to expand and the natural direction of NOKIA is to connect, the arts camp has expanded its shape into providing even academic tutorials for the music scholars plus dance and theatre classes to augment their skills as performing artists. The group DAKILA has come in to provide the theatre component of this camp.
Thus our very own Project:VIA (Volunteers in Artistry) –an activity that used to be a sporadic knowledge-sharing project – has transformed. Ever since NOKIA Philippines partnered with Rock Ed, it has become a regular and devoted music movement that is now housed under NOKIA ACTS. (Artists Coming Together to Serve). If you wish to support a scholar, we are open to donations. Not just of finances but of your time and knowledge.
There are many ways to be part of the Rock Ed-Nokia ACTS music school. If you have a skill that you want to teach or share, (livelihood skill, the value of saving money, bracelet making, candle and soap making, arts and crafts, sculpture, dance, creative writing, collage making, speech and presentation skills) do come and join us on Sundays at the Jesuit Communications’ Multi-media facility called The Garage. (Seminary Drive, AdMU campus) Email: via@rockedphilippines.org or send donations payable to ROCK ED-NOKIA ACTS or deposit to BPI Loyola, Account #3080-0161-22.
Sometimes all one needs in life is a skill set that becomes a passion and then that becomes a life decision. Music has been that for many of Rock Ed’s volunteer roster. Your help will support a project, that develops a music skill, that teaches the value of discipline, that eventually transforms a life.
Kasali ka dito.

Engaged in a conversation with this young man, Rock Ed volunteer Reem Hameed realized that there really is wisdom in listening to a child. They say it as it is. While in town, Reem volunteered for Rock Ed’s continuing project with jails (Project Rehas) and got to know our creative writing class, otherwise known as “the gentlemen poets of Bilibid.” Hameed is a visiting intern at ECPAT Philippines. (End Child Prostitution Child Pornography and Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes) Her mother’s roots are in Escalante, Negros so despite her growing up in the Middle East and now being a law student based in Toronto, she exerts a lot of effort to get to know our country and its issues.

We always know ahead of time when Independence Day is coming up. Vendors along the main thoroughfares will be hawking hand-held flags, some more aggressively than others. We are all for supporting small enterprise so that’s not the main point of this article. I think the more important point will be discovering the spirit and the will behind our flag-waving. June is always a busy month for Rock Ed Philippines, the campuses will be bustling with new waves of activity and student leadership. Rock Ed will always welcome being invited to visit and make its ‘campaign for nation-involvement’ felt in schools and universities. Our first stop will be on Wed, June 18, 2008 at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila.

The young ones of Magallanes Village decided to end their summer with a shindig that makes more sense to them than their usual park festivities. Dubbed as “The Great Summer Bookdrive,” the teen-agers of the village will host an ambitious bookdrive, requesting for donations from their neighboring Makati villages first. Holding it on the last day of May, this gig will end the awarding ceremonies of the summer-long annual sport fest of Barangay Magallanes. Rock Ed volunteer musicians will be performing on that night, check out this line up: THE DAWN, RADIOACTIVE SAGO PROJECT, SANDWICH, CHILLITEES, ENEMIES OF SATURN, SOUTHERN GRASS, MAYONNAISE, URSA MINOR, KING ANTARES, UNNAMED, PITIK and more.
